What activities will I be able to participate in if I join the Luffing Lassies?

As a member of the Luffing Lassies (see ‘About Us’) you will be able to participate in the Learn to-Sail Week, various educational clinics in (prams, Sunfish or 420’s) and many racing and ‘fun sail’ events. On Thursday mornings from September through May, the Luffing Lassies attend fun sails, clinics or learn sailing skills as they race a course complete with race committee and assistant boats. As a Luffing Lassie you will be able to participate in regattas and interclub events at home and away where the Lassies race prams or Sunfish with women from other clubs. With your Luffing Lassies membership you will become a member of the Florida Women’s Sailing Association ( see ‘Links’ for more on the FWSA).The Luffing Lassies enjoy many fun activities together such as the annual Christmas and Year End parties and fun outings planned by the Social Committee. During the summer months Luffing Lassies get together on a flexible schedule for some fun sailing and practice.

What if I have never sailed before?

The Luffing Lassies is the perfect women’s sailing group for all levels. Beginning sailors will have access to excellent instruction and will be supported by others who are eager to share their knowledge (see ‘Membership’).

Do I have to race competitively?

It is up to the individual Luffing Lassie how she navigates the race course on Thursday mornings. Sail as fast as you can or simply enjoy the wind and the water as you sail the course. No matter what your style, sailing a course around marks is an effective and fast way to learn the points of sail, boat handling, rightof- way and other sailing rules. Each year new Luffing Lassie members are thrilled and amazed when, after just a couple of weeks of sailing, they complete a course for the first time!
